Cahill calls for raise of pace in race to qualify

Socceroos star Tim Cahill says while international matches are often played at a slower speed, Australia need to play at a high tempo, and use their pace out wide, against Oman in Tuesdays World Cup qualifier.
The progress of Alex Brosque and Robbie Kruse has finally given Australia speed and width in attack, complemented by using Brett Holman or Tom Rogic as the No.10, and Cahill as the lone striker.
With all three points virtually a must for the Socceroos in their pursuit of a place in Brazil, Cahill said their best hope for winning was to get the ball moving quickly around ANZ Stadium.
Its going to be a high-tempo game, and I [hope] when I lead the line that theres a high energy, Cahill said. Advertisement
I know that international games can be a little bit more relaxed and slow tempo but we really have to pressure them and make them feel unwelcome in our stadium. Theyll be under a lot of pressure to get a result and [they] will be playing very deep. With the pace that weve got on the wings, with Kruse, Brosque and Holman, Ill be hoping they can get a lot of crosses in.
Cahill has played most of his career in midfield, but said he had no qualms adjusting to the strikers role. Australia is different for me. I always feel confident playing higher up the pitch and in a different style, he said. I prepare for however the boss wants to use me and I think thats the most important thing. Adapting to different positions is something that Ive done throughout my whole career.
The 33-year-old, now with Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls, said his switch to the US was done primarily to extend his international career.
The bigger picture in leaving Everton was for playing in another World Cup and giving all I could for the Socceroos, he said. New York, for me, is fantastic. Playing in the MLS is a great lifestyle and its a great league. Weve played three games, Ive had a good rest and a good pre-season.
