Phillies Notes: Brown avoids injections on sore Achilles
Matt Gelb, Inquirer Staff WriterPosted: Tuesday, September 3, 2013, 1:08 AM
The MRI examination of Domonic Browns right Achilles tendon revealed what Ryne Sandberg described Monday as good news. There is tendinitis and bursitis near the tendon, the Phillies said. Brown will play as much as he can tolerate.
Given the way Brown talks about the pain, it could limit his September performance.
It definitely could have been worse, Brown said. But its still tendinitis, so that explains why I play one day and the next couple of days I feel it. It feels OK right now.
Brown has started just two of the Phillies last nine games. Even after a 15-day trip to the disabled list earlier in the season because of a concussion, Brown entered Monday third in the National League with 27 homers. The leader was Pittsburghs Pedro Alvarez with 32.
One knock on Brown before 2013 was his tendency to be slowed by nagging injuries. But Brown started more games in left field than any other player before the all-star break. He started just 24 of 42 games since the break.
Brown said he was not injected with cortisone or any other anti-inflammatory medicine. Sandberg said he would continue to use Brown as a pinch-hitter and replace him with a runner if needed. Brown said he planned to change his pregame workload to survive the seasons final four weeks.
Its a pain-tolerance thing, Sandberg said. Its a thing thats day-to-day and will get better.
Extra bases
The Phillies will play 14 of their next 17 games at Citizens Bank Park, which is a welcome sight considering that they are 27-44 on the road. They have not lost more than 44 road games in one season since 2000 (50 losses). . . . Prospect Severino Gonzalez was promoted to double-A Reading to start the teams final game Monday and allowed two runs in 62/3 innings in a 3-2 victory over New Britain. Gonzalez, 20, finished 2013 with a 2.00 ERA in 1032/3 innings. He struck out 119 and walked just 22. The righthander is likely to be named the organizations pitcher of the year later this month.
