Franco, Gonzalez win Paul Owens Award
Posted: Tuesday, September 3, 2013, 3:31 PM
Maikel Franco and Severino Gonzalez have been given the Paul Owens Award, given each year to the top pitcher and position player in the Phillies farm system.
21-year-old Franco is the more notable of the two, garnering attention for his explosive breakout year. Beginning the season in the Florida State League, Franco hit .299 with a .925 OPS before a promotion to AA Reading. With the Fightin Phils, he upped his game even further, finishing the season with a nuclear slash line of.339/.363/.563, 15 home runs, and 51 RBI in 292 plate appearances.
His placement as a third baseman, adds to his value, though with Cody Asche currently playing at the Major League level, the Phillies have been giving the defensively slick but slow Franco a few goes at first base. Hell head to Venezuela for the winter to stay loose and keep his numbers up.
RHP Gonzalez, 20, is a teammate of Francos, but not until recently. He jumped three levels this year, pitching at Clearwater, High-A Lakewood, and AA Reading across 14 starts and 25 games. He logged a 10.3 SO/9 rate, allowing 22 walks and 119 strikeouts. #post2 .pw-icon.ra1-pw-icon-reddit {background: url() 0px 0px no-repeat !important;width: 60px !important;height: 20px !important;margin-right:8px;}#post2 .pw-icon.ra1-pw-icon-email {background: url() 0px 0px no-repeat !important;width: 71px !important;height: 28px !important;}0commentsReprints & Permissions »
