PHILADELPHIAS Steve Cunningham, the former two-time cruiserweight champion, and Amir Mansour, of Wilmington, Del., are set for tomorrow nights USBA heavyweight title bout at the Liacouras Center.
The two traded proverbial jabs yesterday during the last news conference before the fight, which will be televised on NBC Sports Network. The Fight Night broadcast is set to start at 10 p.m.
He was a great cruiserweight champion, but this is the heavyweight division and that was several years ago, said Mansour, the defending champion who is undefeated in 20 fights, winning 15 by knockout. This is my time. Aint nobody stopping me. I believe he would be more successful trying to step through somebody else in this division but not Amir Mansour.
Cunningham, 37, enters with a career record of 26-6 with 12 knockouts and is coming off a December victory over Manuel Quezada by unanimous decision.
Mansour also last fought in December, knocking out Kelvin Price in the seventh round. The 41-year-old made his professional debut in 1997, but didnt fight between June 2001 and August 2010 while serving time in prison for a drug possession conviction.
When you hear Mansour, you get toughness, you get, Yo man, that dude gritty from the streets. And in actuality, who isnt from the streets? Cunningham said. Who isnt hard out here? . . . Im scared of no man. No man on this earth scares me.
Mansour retorted by saying he was ashamed of his incarceration and wasnt using it as a pedestal for my toughness.
You walk the road that you walk and the road that you walk shapes and forms and molds you into the man that you are, he said. I dont deny my history. I dont deny my presence. And I dont deny my future. And my future is to be successful in this game right here. When you talk about skill sets, I havent seen any kind of skill sets that can outmatch mine. I just havent seen it.
