Angels swept by Seattle Mariners in 8-2 loss

KEY MOMENT: The Angels put the first two runners on base in the first inning when Kole Calhoun doubled to right field and Mike Trout walked. But Albert Pujols grounded into a double play and David Freese lined out to center field, killing the rally and setting the tone for a frustrating evening. The Angels scored twice in the ninth on Trouts run-scoring triple and Freeses sacrifice fly.
AT THE PLATE: Justin Smoak capped a superb series with a ninth-inning home run, giving the Seattle first baseman six hits, including two home runs, and seven runs batted in. Corey Hart also singled and homered, and Brad Miller, Robinson Cano and Stefen Romero each had two hits and an RBI for the Mariners.
ON THE MOUND: Angels starter Hector Santiago needed 26 pitches to complete the first, in which he escaped a two-on, one-out jam, but lasted only five innings, giving up four runs and seven hits. He left with upper-back stiffness. Fernando Salas gave up a run-scoring double and three-run home run in the sixth, and closer Ernesto Frieri, who didnt give up a run in 10 exhibition innings, gave up home runs to Smoak and Hart.
REHAB REPORT: Two relievers took significant steps in their return from injuries, as right-hander Dane De La Rosa (forearm strain) and left-hander Sean Burnett (sore elbow) threw simulated innings to hitters. De La Rosa will start a rehab assignment at double A on Friday or Saturday and hopes to be activated April 11. Burnett will continue his rehab in Arizona.
EXTRA BASES: The Angels claimed reliever Michael Brady off waivers from Miami and assigned the 27-year-old right-hander to double-A Arkansas. The former Santa Margarita High standout had a 1.53 earned-run average and 23 saves for double-A Jacksonville in 2013, striking out 55 and walking nine in 53 innings.
UP NEXT: Right-hander Garrett Richards (7-8, 4.16 ERA in 2013) will oppose Houston right-hander Lucas Harrell (6-17, 5.86 ERA in 2013) at Minute Maid Park on Friday at 5 p.m. PDT. On the air: TV: FS West. Radio: 830.
