Giants news and notes, April 2

Phoenix --
After Jeremy Affeldt resprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, he had one of those back-to-school moments, when teacher asks student why he did something so dumb, and the kid has no answer.
Affeldt admitted he was not wearing his knee brace when he caught a spike during his final spring game March 22 against the White Sox. He had worn it since he first hurt the knee in 2012. The knee felt great this spring, and it would have made sense to ditch the brace had Affeldt felt it was hampering his mechanics. But it wasnt.
I actually think Im better with it, he said. The question was, why didnt I wear the brace? I didnt have an answer for that. The look I got was not a friendly one. I kind of had pie on my face on that one.
At least the injury was not serious. Affeldt is expected to pitch in two rehab games for Triple-A Fresno this weekend and come off the disabled list when the Giants have their home opener Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.
Replay redux: Instant replay did not go the Giants way Tuesday night but might have saved manager Bruce Bochy some money in fines.
Bochy emerged from the dugout four times on calls that went against the Giants. The first three times he was not arguing, but stalling until he got word on whether to challenge. The tone of his conversations with the umpires would have been a lot different without replay.
Id probably get thrown out of the game last night for sure, he said, not joking.
Briefly: Tim Lincecums start Thursday was in jeopardy when he developed food poisoning Tuesday, but he felt much better Wednesday and plans to pitch. ... Bochy plans to give Gregor Blanco his first left-field start in Thursdays series finale. Buster Posey will join Michael Morse on the bench. Bochy also plans to start Brandon Hicks at second base against Dodgers lefty Hyun-jin Ryu on Friday.Giants on deck
