A's beat: Brandon Moss may bunt more

Lost in the 9 hours and 2 minutes from first pitch to last pitch Wednesday was Brandon Moss rare bunt single - in the third inning of the nightcap of the day-night doubleheader.
I learned to bunt in spring training, said Moss, who credited bench coach Chip Hale with teaching him.
Because of dramatic defensive shifts when the pull-hitting Moss is at the plate, with the second baseman playing deep, the shortstop playing on the right side of second and the third baseman playing in the shortstop slot, it was a natural move for Moss to work on bunting toward third base.
Moss first two at-bats this season resulted in groundouts to the shortstop, who was positioned on the right side of the infield. Wednesday, Moss got a hit by beating a throw from the second baseman, who was in right field.
Usually when I hit the ball on the ground, its an out anyway, Moss said. The only time a shift bothers me is when I hit the ball up the middle and am thrown out. You do everything youre supposed to do in an RBI situation and youre out. Thats frustrating, but I understand its part of the game, and thats why Ive learned to bunt.
Hale said Moss knew how to bunt. It was a matter of improving his technique.
In certain situations, why not take a hit? Hale said. Maybe if it gets around the league youre bunting, theyll play you more even. He worked on it and got really comfortable, and he tried it a couple times in spring training. Somehow its not that hard for him.

Hard times: Bob Melvin, when asked if struggling closer Jim Johnson would be used in a non-save scenario Thursday: Anythings potentially possible, but I know he wants to be in a ninth-inning save situation.
