No playing time, but Gill a big help to Flyers
Sam Carchidi, Inquirer Staff WriterPosted: Saturday, April 5, 2014, 1:09 AM
Hal Gill has played in just four games this season and has been a healthy scratch since Dec. 21, but the veteran defenseman has been an important part of the Flyers, coach Craig Berube said after the team practiced Friday in Voorhees.
Gill, who turns 39 on Sunday, was named the Philadelphia Hockey Writers Associations nominee for the Masterton Award, given annually to the player who demonstrates perseverance and dedication to hockey.
Berube called him a great leader and role model, adding that Gill has had a big effect on the younger players because hes played a long time, won a Cup, done that, done this. Guys understand that and respect it. And then they see how hard he works every day and hes not playing, it goes a long way.
Gill, who won a Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 2009, admitted he thought he would play more this season, but it hasnt happened because the Flyers defense has stayed relatively healthy. I hate to say I expected injuries, but I did expect injuries, said Gill, a 6-foot-7, 243-pounder who has played in 1,106 career games. Weve been really fortunate - knock on wood - in that weve had really healthy players. Ill never complain about that.
Added Gill, a Massachusetts native who said his first NHL partner, Ray Bourque, was like a father figure to him when they played in Boston: I try to be good in the locker room and help the team. I think thats part of being a teammate - being supportive and being there and knowing your role.
Breakaways. Berube hinted that winger Steve Downie, sidelined with a head injury the last six games, would play in Boston Saturday afternoon. . . . The Flyers are 32-13-3 when Claude Giroux scores at least one point, and 7-15-6 when he doesnt.
