DAMASCUS, April 4 (Xinhua) -- At least 20 people were injured on Friday in mortar attacks in a Christian-dominated neighborhood of the Syrian capital Damascus, local media reported.
Armed militant groups fired mortar shells into Damascus eastern neighborhood of Bab Touma, injuring 20 people and causing property losses, state news agency SANA said.
The attack is the latest in a series of mortar shelling by the rebels as their clashes with the government troops have intensified in eastern Damascus over the past days.
More than 20 people have been killed over the past two days by mortar shells that struck government-controlled areas in Damascus.
Meanwhile, opposition activists said the Syrian Air Force on Friday carried out a series of airstrikes on rebel-held areas in the eastern countryside of Damascus, mainly the town of Mlaiha, aiming to dislodge the rebels from towns. No causality has been reported.
In the northwestern province of Aleppo, the governments helicopter reportedly dropped explosive barrels on the rebel-held al-Shaar neighborhood, leaving 30 people killed, activists said.
Activists also posted a footage about the air raid in Aleppo, showing dead and injured people in a ravaged spot in al-Shaar neighborhood. Yet, the authenticity of the report couldnt be independently verified.
More than 150,000 people were killed and millions displaced in Syria since opposition started protests in 2011, which later turned into war between the Syrian army and armed rebels.
