Phillies Minor League Report: IronPigs shelled by Sox
Justin Klugh, Philly.comPosted: Saturday, April 5, 2014, 9:40 AM
Pawtucket Red Sox 9, Lehigh Valley IronPigs 4
Clete Thomas walked, stole a base, and scored on a Ronny Cedeno single as the IronPigs offense got rolling early. Cameron Rupp dropped the hammer on the Pawtucket Red Sox yet again with a three-run home run, giving the IronPigs a 4-0 lead. But in the fifth inning, the heavens opened, as did the Red Sox offense.
Starter Barry Enright surrendered two runs and was followed by first time IronPigKyle Simon, who immediately hucked a wild pitch and allowed the tying run to score. Between the two Lehigh Valley pitchers, they would give up four runs each in the inning and Pawtucket would take an insurmountable 8-4 lead that wound up being a 9-4 win.
Rupp is hitting .400 in the IronPigs first three games. Maikel Franco went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Portland Sea Dogs 4, Reading Fightin Phils 1
The Fightins failed to pull the trigger on offense, wasting seven hits by scoring only a single run in a loss to the Portland Sea Dogs.
LF Cam Perkins led the assault with a 2-for-4 performance that included a double and Readings only run scored (their first of the season). 2013 Paul Owens Award winner for the farm systems top pitching prospect Severino Gonzalez got the start and gave up a solo home run in the second inning to open the scoring. It was the only run he allowed in a five inning, three strikeout season debut.
In the sixth, the Sea Dogs started pounding singles with the bases loaded, eventually scoring three runs, aided by an Albert Cartwright throwing error.
Savannah Sand Gnats 10, Lakewood BlueClaws 1
Things werent pretty in Lakewood, as BlueClaws reliever Jesen Therrien was brutalized in the seventh inning, giving up five runs on five hits and a walk. Lakewood was already losing 3-1 at this point, with the starter surrendering three earned runs during his five inning stint to start the game.
The Lakewood offense was silent, its lone run coming from CF Carlos Tocci, who doubled and scored on a wild pitch. SS J.P. Crawford had one of the teams six hits, but Larry Greene went 0-for-4 with a pair of Ks.
Jared King of the Sand Gnats went 2-for-3 with two triples and four RBI.
Clearwater Threshers 2, Dunedin Blue Jays 1
Clearwater had the sole victory among the Phillies farm teams, and had to force their way out of extra innings to do so.
The Blue Jays jumped on starter Ethan Stewart early, but mildly, scoring just a run in the top of the first. It would be all they got in Stewarts impressive seven-inning appearance, in which he gave up only two hits and three walks. Relievers Chris Burgess and Colton Murray didnt allow a hit in the final two innings.
The Threshers had the Blue Jays defense to thank for their runs, both of which were scored on errors. Dunedin logged three on the night, one of which cost them the game in the bottom of the 10th. A walk was followed by a booted play and 2B Anthony Phillips snapped a walk-off single to center.
The teams first run came after a Brian Pointer triple, a Phillips walk, and anther Dunedin error.
