Giants news and notes, April 6

Los Angeles -- - Left fielder Michael Morse started five of the first six games but played only 26 of 44 possible defensive innings. Having leads has allowed manager Bruce Bochy to remove Morse for defense.
That is not the only reason, though. Bochy said Sunday he remains concerned about the calf strain that hampered Morse for much of the exhibition season. That has played into Bochys thinking on when to send Juan Perez or Gregor Blanco to left field.
Yesterday it was a big part of why I took him out early, Bochy said. Thats just me being cautious with him. Ive got two left fielders to get him a break and get him off his legs. But he says hes fine. Theres no issue, and we dont want there to be one.
After Morse looked awful in left field in the March 27 Bay Bridge exhibition against the As, he can expect to work with coach Roberto Kelly before games, but again, Bochy does not want to overwork him and risk reinjuring the calf.
Affeldt improves: Jeremy Affeldts second crack at a rehab appearance for Triple-A Fresno on Sunday went a lot better than his first Friday.
Affeldt (right knee sprain) pitched a hitless inning with two strikeouts in the Grizzlies 6-5 loss at Las Vegas. On Friday, Affeldt started the game and departed after retiring one hitter and allowing three hits, two walks and four runs.
Toward the end of spring training, Bochy said Affeldt would be knocking on the door of activation when the Giants returned to San Francisco for Tuesdays home opener.
Bochy backed off on his prediction for the relievers return after Fridays game.
He was just off, Bochy said. The reports pretty much were what the box score said. He was off with his command, a little bit rusty.
Briefly: Pablo Sandoval wore sunglasses in Venezuelas colors because Sundays game was televised back home. ... The Giants started Sunday with a .255 team batting average, but .385 with runners in scoring position.
